Impaled clockwork wings

Description

I do aim to eventually be a graphic designer/photographer, so if you were so kind as to give critique on this photo, I would take your suggestions very seriously.

My very first steampunk piece.
I made this a few months ago and have been procrastinating putting it up on Deviant, but here it is at long last.

~How it was made~
I bought some gears on etsy and polished them, found a diamonte on the floor and had the wing bead which I tarnished with a little bit of black acrylic. I also twisted some black wire in a spiral and attached it to a silver chain. Glued with apoxy.

A very interesting design for piece of jewlery. The photo needs a lot of work.

The piece: A nice design with the curvature of the wings matching perfectly with large gear.

The photo: The lighting seems okay but the rest of the photo needs some improvement. Firstly, the background needs to be slightly darker to give a little more contrast the the brass gear, it would help give the subject more visability. The suject needs to be positioned better, any time you have a small part of the subject cut out of the photo, like the tip of the back wing, it draws the viewers eye out of the picture and away from your subject. There is also a distracting element on the right side that needs to be cropped out. Lastly, the photo needed to be shot at a greater angle to get more of the back of the piece in focus. Remember in any type, and especially Macro, of photography the smaller the angle you shoot at the shorter your depth of field. So if you are shooting from the same level as the subject only the front of the subject will be in focus the background will be blurred. In this piece, it would have been nice to see the details of the smaller gears and screws in the main assembly part of the pendant. If you want to keep the angle but get more of the subject in focus, you would need to adjust the F-stop. The greater the F/# the longer the depth of field.

Overall, a photo that didn't do justice to the very nicely designed piece.

Stars are for the photo only.
